Audio Recording Techniques
MTS 111

AN INTRODUCTION TO AUDIO ENGINEERING

Audio Recording Techniques is our flagship introductory audio engineering course.

We start with the basics, acoustics & electronics, and examine the underlying concepts audio engineers use as a foundation for their everday professional work. We do some simple projects utilizing these concepts.

USING THE TOOLS

Once we've nailed that down, we introduce students to analog audio equipment: microphones, speakers, and mixing boards. We study how to get the sound into the board, how to process it, and how to get it out.

Along the way we look at microphone construction and placement techniques, internal routing within a mixer environment, signal processing including equalization, compression, and ambience, monitoring, and analog mixing & recording.

MEET PRO TOOLS

Once the analog side of things is nailed down, we introduce students to digital audio at a basic level, and do some hands-on work in using Pro Tools, the profesional tool-of-choice for audio recording editing and mixing.

PREPARATION FOR AN ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL FUTURE

Because many of our students are preparing for careers in music production, all our courses include significant career development content. In this course, we examine networking and employment opportunities. In addition, this course helps students prepare for our other two first year courses, MIDI Music Making (MTS 112), and Digital Music Production (MTS 113).
