This course studies how MIDI technology is used by today's producers to create exciting music tracks entirely with computer software.

We start with some simple editing projects in Digital Performer, then focus on recording using MIDI keyboards.

SOUNDS & NOTATION

Once have the music "captured," we focus on bringing it to life employing sound plug-ins like Reason. And we look at how MIDI files are used, including on the Internet.

We also spend some time with Finale, the complex but useful application that professionals use to create publisher-quality sheet music.

PULLING THE TRIGGER

MIDI is a technology that allows one device to "trigger" sounds on another device. It permeates every aspect of modern music production. This course is an excellent introduction to this powerful tool.

PREPARATION FOR AN ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL FUTURE

Because many of our students are preparing for careers in music production, all our courses include significant career development content. In this course, we discuss the tools that enable freelance producers to find employment. In addition, this course helps students prepare for Digital Music Production (MTS 113), and Introduction to Finale (MTS 312).
