WHEN THE COMPUTER IS THE BAND...

This course studies how MIDI technology is used by today's producers to create exciting music tracks entirely with computer software.

We start with some simple editing projects in state-of-the-art sequencing application Digital Performer, then focus on recording using MIDI keyboards.

SOUNDS & NOTATION

Once we have the music "captured," we focus on making it more colorful using virtual instrument "plug-ins." And we look at how MIDI files are used in modern music making, including on the Internet.

MIDI music is remarkably flexible, but it takes some magic to make it sound natural and musical. We focus on just those techniques--mixing, automation, advanced editing--required to bring this MIDI-made music to life.

PULLING THE TRIGGER

MIDI is a technology that allows one device to "trigger" sounds on another device. It permeates every aspect of modern music production. This course is an excellent introduction to this powerful tool.

PREPARATION FOR AN ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL FUTURE

Because many of our students are preparing for careers in music production, all our courses include significant career development content. In this course, we discuss the tools that enable freelance producers to find employment. In addition, this course helps students prepare for Digital Music Production (MTS 113) and elaborate on principals introduced in Audio Recording Techniques (MTS 111).
