Music Production For Film & Television

MUSIC & SOUND MAKE THE PICTURE COME ALIVE

Music and sound are critically important elements in film-making. This seminar addresses the ways that today's composers and sound designers create the soundtracks that enhance the film experience.

USING THE TOOLS

Using the same tools employed by Hollywood film professionals, we first address setting up and creating a computer film scoring file. We use complex tempo-control and track-locking features to "sync" music and sound effects to a moving picture.

Then, working through a series of increasingly ambitious films (including animation) we cover scoring strategies, video technology, sound effects sources, foley, and advanced music production techniques. We also cover interfacing with film production staff, media delivery types, film production terminology, and soundtrack afterlife.

THE RESULT IS REEL

When the term is complete, students will have a collection of short films that feature their work in music composition, music editing, dialogue editing, sound effects, and mixing. This collection (a "reel" in Hollywood-speak) can be used to demonstrate skills as students go forward seeking employment or free-lance work.

PREPARATION FOR A PROFESSIONAL FUTURE

Because many of our students are preparing for careers in music production, all our courses include significant career development content. In this course, we examine copyright, broadcast rights, pricing, and large project management. For students who have completed all three 100-level courses, completion of this course fulfills the requirements for OMTS certification.
